Research Fellowship (BI) (Reference REQUIMTE 2024-31)
Main research field: Chemistry
Admission requirements: Master's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Technology and Food Science, or other similar areas and enrollment in a doctoral program or enrollment/attendance of a non-degree course taught by a higher education institution in conjunction with an R&D unit in Food Chemistry areas. Experience in nutritional and phytochemical characterization by chromatographic techniques such as HPLC-DAD and HPLC-MS of plant matrices will be valued.
In case the Master's degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 341/2007 of October 12th, and all formalities established therein must be complied with at the signature of the Fellowship contract.
Working plan:
* Development and optimization of methodologies for the extraction, purification, and characterization of phenolic compounds and vitamins from plant matrices (legumes and pseudocereals);
* Assessment of amino acid content in plant matrices (legumes and pseudocereals);
* Development and optimization of different biotechnological processes (germination and fermentation) to improve the nutritional profile of plant matrices;
* Evaluation of the profile and gastrointestinal bioaccessibility of bioactive compounds and metabolites after applying biotechnological processes.
Applicable Legislation: Law nº.40/2004, 18th August (Research Fellow Statute) amended and republished by Decreto-Lei n.º 123/2019, 28th August; FCT Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships.
Work Place: The work will be conducted at Departamento de Química e Bioquímica from FCUP, under the supervision of Doctor Ana Fernandes, Doctor Joana Oliveira, and Professor Iva Fernandes.
Duration: The fellowship will have a duration of 12 months, eventually renewed for an additional period of 6 months, with a total duration of 18 months and will start on January 1st, 2025.

The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and work insurance.
Selection criteria: The selection methods will be based on an assessment of the candidate’s scientific and academic background. The evaluation will consider the Master’s final grade (C1), experience in the field of food organic chemistry, and experience in the area of natural bioactive compounds (C2). The final score for the academic and scientific track record (ACPS) will be calculated using a specific formula. If there are candidates whose score is within 10% of the highest-scoring candidate, the jury will interview the top candidate and any other candidates within this range. In this case, the interview will carry a weight of 20%. The jury will not award the current scholarship to candidates with a final classification lower than 50%.
