WHO YOU'LL WORK WITH Bain's Advanced Manufacturing & Services (AMS) Practice is in search of a talented leader to help us drive our Machinery, Equipment, Systems and Control sector (Machinery) to the next level of growth and impact.
Our AMS clients are going through unprecedented change, driven by forces including de-globalization, resiliency, digitalization, sustainability strategy, and engine 1 / engine 2 decisions.
Many of these forces have accelerated over the last twelve months because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and further new trends have emerged around returning to work, new normal, and growing out of a downturn.

AMS is one of Bain's largest and fastest growing industry practices, and Machinery is one of the largest sectors within AMS.
WHERE YOU'LL FIT WITHIN THE TEAM Our Bain AMS practice leadership team works as servant leaders to our client heads and account teams, in their mission to drive client full potential, which in turn drives our AMS practice full potential.
This includes setting our strategy across client, talent, and IP assets, and leading a pragmatic and value-adding practice management effort.
Increasingly, we are "co-managing the business" along with the offices and regions.
AMS is comprised of several dynamic sectors, which collectively drive a large portion of the global economy:
Aerospace, Defense, and Government Services (A&D)Automotive and Mobility (A&M)AirlinesBuilding Products (BP)Logistics, and Transport (L&T)Machinery, Equipment, Systems and Controls (Machinery)MetalsPaper and Packaging (P&P)You will be an integral part of the practice leadership team, working on initiatives across the full scope of the AMS practice and helping us to accelerate our commercial success.
You will interact most closely with the Global Machinery leadership team (Senior Partners).
In addition, you will work across a broad team including overall AMS leadership team and local practice leaders (other Partners), sector practice managers and consultants, our knowledge management team, and product leaders in the AMS practice, globally.
You will also have a close working relationship with the AMS Executive Vice President and Director as well as regional AMS leadership teams to coordinate Machinery with the rest of AMS.
You may occasionally manage consulting resources to support specific product development efforts (when relevant and available) and/or may also manage analyst resources at the Bain Capability Centers.
WHAT YOU'LL DO Sector Full Potential and Team Management Connect the global Machinery leadership team and regularly engage regional teams to drive commercial outcomes – keep LT informed about recent developments, e.g.
run regular regional calls, prepare quarterly global team meetings, send out newsletters, prepare materials for regional LT meetingsDrive full potential plan for Machinery globally and support regional sector growth plansTransfer growth plans into account management as needed (priority client definition, account scaling and penetration (e.g.
support regional key account management processes for selected accounts), roll out of priority IP to key clients)Program manage the overall Machinery commercial drumbeat, to drive velocity with and sparring to Client Team Leadership.
Including, create the outlook of global Machinery pipeline vs. regional Machinery and AMS pipeline along sector priorities.Connect and actively participate in AMS global leadership team for sparring and advancement of AMS sector overallIP Design and Development, Delivery and Commercialization Define sector IP priorities and drive IP roadmap for Machinery including team deployment, presentation to product board and alignment with marketing teamFacilitate sharing of insights and IP globally across Machinery (Machinery/AMS IP and capability insights)Engage actively in IP development (Machinery and AMS focus) incl.
briefs and sales materials for key Machinery topics and become expert for one dedicated topic.
(Which topics will be depending on personal expertise and experience but can include for example: Manufacturing and Operations, Industrial Services, Technology / IT / Digitalization and Sustainability)Own and product manage key proprietary Machinery IP products and related marketing, e.g.
global Machinery Report and corresponding marketing activitiesTailor IP efforts from capability content to MachinerySelling, Serving Support and Direct Client Impact Provide best expertise to front line teams by connecting teams with relevant experts and/or providing materials and input in CD efforts.Support targeted efforts, such as client development and high priority proposals, e.g., providing guidance on application of Machinery IP to specific client situations.
Includes select direct participation in CD efforts for priority topics/clientsOver time, with growing experience in the role and deepened expertise in the sector (focus areas to be defined together with Machinery leadership) the role will increasingly also entail:Act as Machinery IP topical advisor within select areas of expertise in client discussionsSupport account development (e.g., supporting account meetings, strengthening the capability interlocks, lead pipeline and sales play monitoring) for a small number of top priority Machinery clients.Selectively support case team delivery and participate in client meetings within select areas of expertiseThere is significant opportunity for multi-year impact and growth in the role.
You will build deeper strategy and operations experience while helping to drive Bain's commercial results.
ABOUT YOU Current or recent consulting experience within a global strategy consulting company at the Senior Consultant or Manager level (including ability to lead teams)Former consultants with corporate experience within publicly traded and/or private equity backed businessesExperience in one or several Machinery related industries, or an affinity for those industries is a plus, but not a requirement.
The role entails an expectation to develop expertise in one or a few industry related areas, which can be acquired over time in the role.Proven self-starter, comfortable with what could be a remote supervisor and team, with demonstrated problem solving and analytical skillsSkilled at identifying opportunities for commercial growth and transformation and driving change through an organization by indirectly influencing multiple stakeholdersAbility to develop and drive pragmatic business insights supported by complex business research and analysis in fast-paced environmentProficient in developing audience-right high quality presentations
