Offer DescriptionA call for applications is now open for the attribution of one Research Grant at Egas Moniz Cooperativa de Ensino Superior, CRL, within the scope of the project SOL – Smart ocular lenses for the treatment of diabetic eye diseases, ref.
PTDC/CTM-CTM/2353/2021, funded exclusively by the Portuguese State Budget, through the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), I.P., under the following conditions:
Scientific Area: Biomedical Engineering
Admission requirements: National, foreign and stateless persons, holders of a Master degree in Biomedical Engineering or similar, can apply to the call.
Preferred factors:
Solid knowledge in biomaterials science, tissue engineering, biomolecular engineering and computational biology;Proven experience in the development of advanced drug delivery systems for precision healthcare, in particular for ocular treatments;Fluency in English.Workplan: The main goal of the work will be to develop and optimize new drug delivery systems for the treatment of diabetic ocular diseases, based on soft contact lenses (CLs), that allow a controlled drug release into the eye and a higher bioavailability relative to the conventional pharmacological treatments (e.g.
eyedrops).
Hydrogels intended for CLs will be synthesized, characterized and optimized to ensure sustained delivery of the drugs.
The materials will be characterized regarding morphology, chemical composition, wettability, light transmittance, liquid uptake, hydrophilicity, mechanical properties, cytotoxicity, irritability.
Drug release tests will be performed in static and hydrodynamic conditions (microfluidic cells).
Drug quantification will be done by UV-Vis spectrophotometry or HPLC.
Experiments will also involve ex vivo tests to study the drug permeability in the ocular tissues and evaluation of the neuroprotective effect by using immunofluorescence.
Applicable legislation and regulations: Research Fellowship Statute; Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.
- in force (Bolsas - FCT)
Workplace: The work will be performed at Egas Moniz School of Health & Science (EM) and Instituto Superior Técnico - Centro de Química Estrutural (IST- CQE) under the scientific guidance of Professor Ana Paula Serro.
Duration of the grant: The scholarship will have a duration of 3 months, being predicted to start on May 15, 2025.
Monthly maintenance subsidy: The scholarship amount corresponds to €1.309,64 (one thousand three hundred and nine euros and sixty-four cents) per month, according to the table of values of the scholarships awarded directly by FCT, I.P.
in the Country (Tabela_valores_SMM_2025.pdf), plus Voluntary Social Insurance and Personal Accident Insurance.
Selection method: The selection method is based in a first stage on the curricular evaluation.
The two candidates with the best classification will be invited for an interview to discuss their curriculum and motivation.
The final grade will be the weighted average of the curriculum evaluation (weight 60%) and the interview (weight 40%).
Composition of the Selection Jury: The Jury will be composed of: Ana Paula Serro (Chairman), Ana Herdade (member) and Benilde Saramago (member).
Form of publicity/notification of the results: The final results of the evaluation will be publicized through a list sorted by classification posted in a visible and public place next to the Human Resources Department of Egas Moniz School of Health & Science.
All candidates will be notified by e-mail.
Deadline for application and form of submission of applications: The call is open from 15 to 30 April.
