Call for Research Initiation Grant
The University of Coimbra opens a call for the assignment of a research initiation grant, with one position, within the scope of the project IACDC/2024, title INEPTITUDE - AI and NMR Spectroscopy for Product Authentication in Agricultural and Food Biotechnology.
This call is governed by this Announcement, the Research Grants Regulation of the University of Coimbra (RBI-UC), supplemented by the Research Grants Regulation of the Foundation for Science and Technology (RBI-FCT), the Research Grant Holder Statute (EBI), the Rules for the Attribution and Management of Grants within the scope of R&D Projects, the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), all in their current wording, and other applicable national and EU legislation.

I - Legal admission requirements I.I - Grant Recipients:
Student enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree in Biological chemistry or Computer Science, with a view to beginning their scientific training through integration in R&D Projects.
I.II - Ineligible candidates:
Candidates who have previously received any research grants under the terms of the EBI are not eligible.
I.IV - The following are eligible for the grant(s), provided they meet the requirements outlined above:
* Portuguese nationals or nationals of other EU Member States
* Nationals of third countries
* Stateless persons
* Beneficiaries of political refugee status
When the work plan takes place, in whole or in part, in foreign institutions, only candidates who can prove permanent and habitual residence in Portugal at the start of the grant are eligible.

IV - Work Plan / Goals to be achieved:
Development of research work in the field of biological chemistry and computer science for the identification of molecular biomarkers for food authenticity using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Solutions and techniques based on Artificial Intelligence (Deep and Machine Learning) will be developed for the identification and specification of different botanical or geographical origins. In terms of food safety and authenticity, models will be designed to improve efficiency in the molecular identification of food adulteration or deterioration based on these biomarkers.
In light of this, the following tasks are expected to be carried out:
* Molecular characterisation and validation tests for food biomarkers
* Preparation and acquisition of NMR data
* Participation in the publication of scientific articles, as well as in congresses

The grant(s) assigned under this call will be funded by Plano de Recuperação e Resiliência (PRR) financed by the European Union - NextGenerationEU.

VII.I - AR:
The curriculum evaluation considers the candidates' academic and professional achievements based on the following weights and criteria:
* Criterion 1 - Absolute merit of curriculum vitae
* Criterion 2 – Academic knowledge
* Criterion 3 – Specific knowledge related to the work plan
* Criterion 4 - Academic background
* Criterion 5 – The grades obtained in the subjects relevant to the type of fellowship
* Criterion 6 – Knowledge of foreign languages, particularly English
* Criterion 7 – Scientific dissemination actions
VII.II- Criteria evaluation and final classification:
All candidates who meet the admission requirements are subject to the academic record evaluation, carried out according to the criteria and weights defined.
