RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION PROCESS FOR AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN THE DISCIPLINARY AREA OF ECONOMICS AT THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTO
António de Sousa Pereira, Full Professor at the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Porto and Rector of the same University, hereby announces that a recruitment procedure is open for a period of 30 working days, starting from the working day following the publication of this notice in the Jornal de Notícias and on the websites of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto and the University of Porto. This recruitment process aims to select an Assistant Professor on an indefinite employment contract, under the Labor Code and the Regulation of Celebration of Employment Contracts for Teaching Personnel of the University of Porto under the Labor Code (Order no. 1567/2013 of January 25, 2013, published in the DR, 2nd series, no. 18, of January 25, 2013), for the disciplinary area of Economics, particularly in the domain of Macroeconomics.
1. Admission to the recruitment process:
Candidates who hold a doctoral degree will be admitted.
Holders of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions must have their doctoral degree recognized under the terms of Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16, in its current version, by the deadline for signing the contract.
2. Absolute merit
2.1. If there are no grounds for rejecting applications for failure to comply with the provisions of the previous paragraph, the Selection Committee will decide whether or not to approve them on absolute merit, by justified roll-call vote, with no abstentions allowed.
2.2. A candidate who is approved by an absolute majority of the voting members of the Selection Committee will be considered to have passed on absolute merit.
2.3. Candidates' approval on absolute merit will depend on their cumulative fulfillment of the following conditions:
1. The candidate must hold a PhD in Economics or another area deemed appropriate;
2. The candidate must possess a curriculum whose merit the selection committee considers to reflect a scientific and pedagogical level, research capacity, and professional activity compatible with the disciplinary area and academic rank for which the position is open;
3. The candidate must have a curriculum vitae that demonstrates solid competencies in at least one of the core areas of Economics: Macroeconomics and Econometrics.
4. The candidate must have, in the last five years (since 2019 inclusive), at least one article published or accepted for publication in journals ranked 3 to 4* in the Academic Journal Guide by the Chartered Association of Business Schools (ABS), or two articles published or definitively accepted for publication in scientific journals indexed in categories 2 to 4* of the ABS, or in the top two quartiles of the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) of the Web of Science (WoS), or in the top quartile of the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR).
The journals where these articles are published or definitively accepted for publication must be indexed in the following scientific categories:
* Academic Journal Guide by the Chartered Association of Business Schools (ABS) (Academic Journal Guide: Economics).
* Journal Citation Reports (Clarivate): Economics.
* SCImago Journal Rank (Scopus): Economics and Econometrics.
The quartile/ranking of the journals to be considered is that of the most recent edition of each bibliographic database, regardless of the year of publication of the article.
3. Selection Process
The selection process for candidates admitted to the recruitment process will occur in two phases: Curriculum Assessment (CA) and Interview (I), with the former being eliminatory for candidates who, despite having been approved based on absolute merit, according to point 2, do not meet the required conditions for admission to the interview as stipulated in point 3.2.1 below.
3.1. Curriculum Assessment (CA):
Evaluation Aspects and Criteria
In the curriculum assessment process, the following aspects will be considered, in accordance with Article 14, Paragraph 2 of the “Regulation of Celebration of Employment Contracts for Teaching Personnel of the University of Porto under the Labor Code”:
a) Scientific Merit Aspect (SMA - 60%):
This aspect will consider scientific research activities in the field of Economics:
1. Quality and relevance of scientific production conducted in the last five years, indexed in the disciplinary area of the announcement, according to the categories defined by the bibliographic bases relevant to the journals where the articles were published (70%);
2. Recognition and impact of the research within the scientific community (20%);
3. Other scientific activities (10%).
b) Pedagogical Merit Aspect (PMA - 20%):
This aspect will consider pedagogical activities in the field of Economics:
1. Teaching activities and pedagogical performance, measured through pedagogical surveys, awards, and other distinctions (80%);
2. Other pedagogical activities (20%).
c) Scientific-Pedagogical Project (20%):
This project should outline the scientific and pedagogical domains that the candidate proposes to develop, highlighting their innovative contributions in the disciplinary area for which the competition is open, and/or their contributions to the mission of the University.
This project should demonstrate the candidate's research interests, as well as their research plans for the next five years, and how they intend to relate this research to teaching and other activities relevant to the development of FEP's mission. The project must not exceed 4000 words, with its format and organization left to the candidate's discretion.
3.1.2. The grading of the components is always done on a standardized scale of 0-100 points.
3.1.3. Following their evaluative exercise, each member of the Selection Committee prepares their ranked list of curricular evaluation, in accordance with the criteria, which they use in the voting process that determines the candidates' ranking in the curricular assessment method, accompanied by the respective justification.
3.2. Interview (I):
3.2.1. The interview takes place in the second phase of the process, complementing the curriculum assessment, and is conducted only for candidates ranked in the top three positions of the curriculum assessment.
3.2.2. The evaluation of aspects is always carried out on a standardized scale of 0-100.
In the interview evaluation, each jury member conducts their evaluative exercise, scoring each candidate according to each criterion, on a scale from 0 to 100 points.
3.2.3. Evaluation Criteria and Corresponding Weighting.
The following criteria and respective weights will be considered in the interview evaluation:
1. Organization (10%) – the structure of the presentation and adherence to time will be evaluated.
2. Presentation (20%) – the presenter’s demeanor and effectiveness will be evaluated (comfort, voice projection, cadence of the presentation, engaging the audience's interest, etc.).
3. Presentation Aids (10%) – supporting materials for the presentation (slides, videos, etc.) will be evaluated. The "readability" of textual sequences, figures, or graphs will also be assessed (including graphic composition, labeling, etc.).
4. Content (30%) – the scientific level of the information presented, as well as the quality of its discussion, will be evaluated.
5. Responses (30%) – the candidate's demeanor, confidence, and command of knowledge demonstrated during the response period will be evaluated.
3.3. The Selection Committee will apply a weighted average in the final evaluation of candidates admitted to the interview phase, with 70% assigned to the curricular evaluation and 30% to the interview.
3.2.4. Operating Procedure
The jury has the option to decide whether the interviews will be conducted in person or online.
a) The decision regarding the date and location of the interviews, in the case of in-person interviews, must be communicated to the candidates via email with a minimum notice of five business days.
b) Each candidate's interview has a maximum duration of one hour, which may be extended by an additional half hour at the discretion of the Jury President.
c) It is the responsibility of the Jury President to conduct the interview; however, they may allow for the intervention of other jury members in the interaction with the candidate.
d) The interview consists of a presentation, with a maximum duration of 30 minutes, in English, of a scientific article published or in the submission/publication process co-authored by the candidate, followed by a discussion in Portuguese regarding the presented work.
e) If the candidate or any jury member is not proficient in Portuguese, the entire interview will be conducted in English.
f) Failure to attend the previously scheduled interview will result in disqualification from the competition.
3.3. The Selection Committee will apply a weighted average in the final evaluation of candidates admitted to the interview phase, with 70% assigned to the curricular evaluation and 30% to the interview.
3.4. Following their evaluative exercise, each member of the Selection Committee prepares their ranked evaluation list, which they use in the voting process that leads to the final decision and ranking of the candidates.
4. Deliberations of the Selection Committee
4.1. The Selection Committee will decide on the approval and ranking of candidates by means of a reasoned roll-call vote, based on the selection criteria adopted and the scores awarded for each.
4.2. The jury's decisions are approved by an absolute majority of its members, with no abstentions allowed.
4.3. In the event of a tie, the Chairman of the Selection Committee casts the deciding vote.
5. Duties to be performed:
The duties to be performed are described in Annex I of the Regulations for the Conclusion of Employment Contracts for Teaching Staff at the University of Porto under the Labor Code (Order no. 1567/2013 of January 25, 2013, published in the Official Gazette, 2nd series, no. 18, of January 25, 2013) which includes the general requirements to be met by candidates:
Assistant professors are responsible for teaching practical and theoretical-practical classes and providing services in laboratory or field work, in curricular units of the various study cycles and non-degree programs or courses, as well as teaching curricular units of these study cycles and programs or courses. They are also responsible for guiding and carrying out research work, in accordance with the general guidelines previously established at the level of the organizational unit in which they are integrated. They are also responsible for carrying out university outreach, scientific dissemination and the economic and social valorization of knowledge, as well as participating in university management and carrying out other tasks assigned by the competent management bodies and which fall within the scope of university teaching. Assistant professors may be assigned the same teaching duties as associate professors if they have five years of effective service as a university teacher or researcher.
The application must be accompanied by the following documents; failure to provide these will result in disqualification from the competition:
1. A copy of the qualification certificate required in point 1 of the call for applications: Candidates selected for the position(s) who hold a doctoral degree obtained abroad must present the recognition or registration (as applicable) of their degree at the time of signing the contract, in accordance with Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16, under penalty of exclusion.
2. Curriculum Vitae, which must include:
3. Teaching and research activities deemed relevant to the present competitive procedure, in accordance with the evaluation criteria set out in point 3 of this announcement. The candidate's curriculum vitae must be organized according to the evaluation criteria outlined in point 3 of this announcement and must contain a preamble demonstrating that the candidate meets the absolute merit evaluation criteria established in point 3 of this announcement.

5. Article to be presented at the interview.
6. Scientific-pedagogical project that the candidate proposes to develop to promote teaching and research activities in the disciplinary area for which the competition is open, in accordance with the criteria presented in point 4.1 of this announcement.
7. Candidates of foreign nationality, who are not native speakers of Portuguese or English, must declare under honor that they possess C1-level language proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in at least one of the languages.
8. Candidates who, at the time of application, do not master the Portuguese language must declare under honor that, in the event of being recruited, they commit to promptly initiate the corresponding learning process, ensuring their capacity to teach in Portuguese within a timeframe of up to two years, with mastery of the Portuguese language at C1 level of the CEFR being an essential requirement for their subsequent approval during the probationary period.
6.3. Each document listed in item e) of point 6.2 of the competition announcement must be submitted as an individual file and in full version within the Sigarra system. Documents can be included in compressed folders (zip, rar, 7z), taking into account the upload limit of the system, which is set at a maximum of 720MB per file or compressed folder. Each application can submit multiple files or compressed folders, each with the 720 MB limit, with no limit on the total number of files/compressed folders submitted.
6.4. The aforementioned documents must be submitted in PDF format.
6.5. Failure to comply with the provisions of 6.1. will result in the rejection of the application.
6.6. Failure to submit the documents referred to in points a) to h) of section 6.2. will result in the non-admission of the application.
7. Notifications and Hearing of Interested Parties
7.1. The Human Resources Service of the Common Resources and Services Center of the University of Porto will notify candidates of the decisions made regarding the competitive procedure.
7.2. All candidates will be notified of the final decision of the Selection Committee.
7.3. Notifications will be made via email, in accordance with Articles 112, Paragraph 1, Item c), and 113, Paragraph 5, of the Administrative Procedure Code (CPA).
The deadline for candidates to respond in writing is ten business days.
